Fall is officially here, and Richmond is ready to get spooky. From haunted history and eerie gardens to pumpkins, ghost stories, and Halloween celebrations, there are plenty of ways to embrace the season around RVA.
Whether you’re looking for an actual scare or just an excuse to put on a costume and get into the Halloween spirit, here are five ways to make the most of spooky season in Richmond.
1. Hear Some Spooky Stories at Agecroft Hall
Step inside Richmond’s historic Agecroft Hall after dark for an evening of spooky stories. Haunted Hearth features living-history interpreters sharing eerie tales from 17th-century England, along with stories about historical traditions and the people who lived in the manor.

2. Get Your Gothic Fix at the Poe Museum
Richmond’s connection to Edgar Allan Poe makes the Poe Museum a natural stop during spooky season. The museum has events throughout October, including Poe’s Death Day Celebration, Edgar’s Enchanted Garden Family Day, a screening of The Fall of the House of Usher, Halloween UnHappy Hour and after-hours lantern tours.

3. Take a Haunted Walk Through Richmond
See some familiar Richmond streets from a different perspective with a ghost tour from Haunts of Richmond. The Shadows of Shockoe Ghost Tour explores Shockoe Bottom through local history, folklore and stories of tragedy and reported paranormal activity.

4. Get Seriously Scared at Red Vein Haunt
If you're looking for more than ghost stories, head to Red Vein Haunt for four haunted attractions designed to deliver a full night of scares. The haunt's 2026 season runs from September 26 through October 31, with attractions, food and drinks, and other entertainment on site.

5. Celebrate Queer Joy at Grimalkin Fest
Spooky season is a great excuse to get dressed up, and Grimalkin Fest gives Richmond’s queer community a place to celebrate. The annual festival features live music, art, vendors, costumes, and a catwalk celebrating queer creativity and community.
The 2026 festival takes place October 10-11 at Basic City Beer Co., with a virtual event on October 17.
