Savoring Inclusivity: An Interview With Gold Lion Community Cafe

Welcome to Gold Lion Community Cafe, where hospitality meets community engagement, and plant-based cuisine takes center stage. In an exclusive interview with the queer owners, Matt and Nafis, we delve into the inspiration behind Gold Lion, its vision for LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, community impact, and the delectable fusion of flavors on its menu.

What inspired you to create Gold Lion Community Cafe?

Matt has always had a passion for the hospitality industry – managing several restaurants in Baltimore and Nashville, as well as working as a pastry chef. Nafis has always loved to bring community together, whether it’s through his yoga practice or as a Real Estate Agent. Together, we wanted to create a space that we’d like to hang out in. Somewhere we could eat all of our favorite vegetarian foods and share them with the community.

Can you share your vision for Gold Lion and how you hope it contributes to the LGBTQIA+ community?

At Gold Lion, we aim to create a safe space for the LGBTQ and BIPOC communities of Richmond, introduce folks to a plant-based diet, and work to help combat hunger in our neighborhood.

We hope to create an affirming space where communities can blend. We also want to be a premier venue for LGBTQ entertainment, as well as community leaders who work to make a change for a more equitable Richmond.

How has the local community responded to Gold Lion, especially considering its LGBTQIA+ affirming focus?

We have been absolutely blown away by the support we’ve received from our community! Throughout the last 3 months, we’ve met members from the LGBTQ community, neighbors, faith leaders, civil servants, students, families, and allies, and can’t wait to keep growing our community.

In what ways do you actively engage with the community, both within and outside the LGBTQIA+ spectrum?

We host a variety of free, donation, and covered events that range from Drag performances to comedy showcases. We also allow nonprofits to host events at our café, such as ReEstablish Richmond, an organization working to connect refugees and immigrants to the resources needed to establish roots, build community, and become self-sufficient.

We also partner with other LGBTQ-owned and ally-owned businesses, such as Afterglow Coffee, Dayum Jam, and more.

In what ways do you see Gold Lion contributing to LGBTQ tourism in Richmond, and what impact do you hope to have on visitors?

We hope to be a place for plant-based travelers to feel at home. As vegetarians, we know how difficult it can be to eat out when you’re traveling. At Gold Lion, we can bring the food and the entertainment.

We also want to show folks what we see in Richmond – a welcoming, inclusive city filled with some of the most creative and talented people ever!

Can you highlight some of the standout dishes on your menu that reflect your fusion of vegetarian fare with an Indian influence?

If you haven’t tried it yet, I’d try our Butter Chick’n! Right now, the Desi Lo Mein is our favorite item on the menu! It’s got a spicy Szechuan kick and classic Indochinese flavors. Our samosas are our family recipe and are made from scratch with love.

Are there any specific initiatives or partnerships that you're particularly proud of?

I think the initiative that we’re proudest of is our free community meal. For those in need, they can order a coffee and a bagel on Duke’s tab to give dignity to those asking for help.

Tell us about Duke's Den Cocktail Lounge – how does it complement the cafe, and what atmosphere are you aiming to create there?

In our house, Duke is a legend. He is our 15-year-old beagle who’s been through life with me (Matt) through so many different seasons. He’s part dog, part alien, and every song in the history of the world is written about him. Duke is pure joy and love, and Duke’s Den is our ode to him.

We want Duke’s Den to feel upscale, but also familiar. Next to the full menu at Gold Lion, Duke’s Den serves up craft-inspired cocktails & mocktails, as well as showcasing our favorite local brews.

Are there any initiatives or choices you've made that align with a commitment to responsible business practices?

As business owners, this is something we think about all the time! We are committed to ensuring our team members earn a living wage, as well as providing compostable coffee cups to reduce our environmental impact.

As you explore Richmond's many culinary offerings, don't miss the chance to experience Gold Lion—where flavors fuse and people unite in the spirit of love, belonging, and shared experiences. With every dish and every event, Matt and Nafis cultivate an environment full of warmth and acceptance, making Gold Lion not just a destination for plant-based delights but a haven of LGBTQIA+ affirmation.
