Sportin' Around Town
Richmond Region Tourism describes Richmond as an “awe-inspiring place to visit, a huge outdoor domain, and the perfect place to hold a sports event.” From indoor to outdoor sports, this area has the fields, pitches, diamonds, pools, and enthusiastic fans to help you root root root for the home team— no matter your sport of choice.
Richmond is home to a wide range of sports and truly has something for everyone. Where else can you find world-renowned NASCAR racing, arena sports, indoor and outdoor rock climbing, white water rafting, award-winning baseball, BMX competitions, and so much more all in one place? There’s a reason Richmond was chosen as the site for the UCI Road World Championships for the first time in the US in decades.
Fans can visit the city to cheer on the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball team or the Richmond Kickers soccer team. You could take it back to school by supporting Richmond’s college teams— the VCU’s Rams, University of Richmond’s Spiders, Virginia Union’s Panthers, or Randolph-Macon’s Yellow Jackets. For the complete outdoor spectator experience, join the crowd at Dominion Energy Riverrock (the nation’s largest outdoor sports and music festival) to enjoy speed rock climbing, kayaking competitions, slacklining, long-distance dog-jumping, and more. Get involved and test your stamina during the Richmond marathon (deemed “America’s Friendliest Marathon” by Runner’s World), or join in on the Ukrop’s Monument 10k (a fan favorite for over a decade that brings in more than 20,000 participants each year). In 2016, Richmond became home to its first women's sports team, the Women's Football Alliance’s Richmond Black Widows, who play on the campus of Virginia Union University. Our city is equipped with many venues where you can catch a great game, race, meet, or tournament. And with a new sports complex and the development of the Diamond District on the horizon, there is plenty to look forward to.
