Richmond Named in Lonely Planet’s New LGBTQ+ Travel Guide
Richmond is once again making waves on the international stage—this time as one of the world’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. The city has been featured in The LGBTQ+ Travel Guide: Interviews, Itineraries, & Inspiration from Insiders in 50 Proud Places Around the Globe, a new guidebook from Lonely Planet, set to be released in the U.S. on March 18, 2025.
The highly anticipated travel guide showcases more than 50 queer-friendly destinations worldwide, with insights from LGBTQ+ locals who share their favorite experiences, hidden gems, and community-driven spaces. Richmond’s inclusion in the guide highlights the city’s commitment to being a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ visitors and residents alike.
For over a decade, Richmond has been cultivating a reputation as a city that celebrates diversity. Since 2014, OutRVA has been at the forefront of showcasing the region as a welcoming and inclusive destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. From supporting queer-owned businesses to amplifying LGBTQ+ voices through storytelling and partnerships, OutRVA has helped position Richmond as a top-tier destination for those seeking affirming and meaningful experiences.
The thoughtfully curated guidebook provides an intimate look at what it means to be a queer traveler in different parts of the world. In it, readers will find insider recommendations from LGBTQ+ locals and tastemakers, off-the-beaten-path experiences, practical travel tips, queer-owned businesses, and more.
Richmond’s inclusion in the guide is yet another milestone in the city’s growing travel appeal. Over the past few years, RVA has been featured in leading travel publications for its acclaimed food scene, award-winning craft beverages, exciting art culture, and deep historical significance. Now, as a recognized LGBTQ+-friendly destination, the city is further solidifying its place on the global travel map.
“We are thrilled that the Richmond Region has been recognized as a destination that embraces and uplifts the LGBTQ+ community,” said Katherine O’Donnell, President and CEO of Richmond Region Tourism. “We are committed to fostering a spirit of inclusivity here, and we look forward to welcoming travelers seeking a destination that celebrates and welcomes them as they are.”
