Richmond Doubles Down on LGBTQ+ Support

Richmond is making it clear: the city stands with its LGBTQ+ community.

In a powerful show of solidarity, the City of Richmond has publicly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly as legislative challenges arise at state and national levels.

The city recently shared a statement across official platforms, standing alongside organizations like Diversity Richmond, Virginia Pride, Side by Side, the Virginia Anti-Violence Project, and Equality Virginia. More than just words, this statement signals Richmond’s intent to support and uplift the queer and trans community through action and policy.

“We are incredibly fortunate that we have a city government that recognizes us, sees the LGBTQ community, celebrates the LGBTQ community — that, in this particular environment, is an anomaly right now,” said James Millner, Pride Director of Diversity Richmond, in a statement to WRIC.

Now, with city leadership explicitly recognizing and backing these efforts, Richmond is reinforcing its role as a leader in LGBTQ+ inclusion.

The city’s statement comes at a crucial time. Across the country, legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals—particularly transgender youth—is on the rise. By taking a firm stand, Richmond is distinguishing itself from these broader legislative trends. The city is calling on policymakers at all levels to:

  • Uphold legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.

  • Ensure access to lifesaving healthcare, particularly for transgender youth.

  • Engage directly with affected communities to create inclusive solutions.
