Running, Walking, and Building Queer Community at Babe’s

On Thursday evenings in Richmond, a group of runners and walkers gather outside of Babe’s of Carytown. What started in early August 2025 as a simple meet-up has quickly grown into Rainbow Miles Run Club, a queer-centered run club that’s less about competition and more about connection.

The group meets weekly at 6:00 p.m., with the run kicking off at 6:15 to catch the last light of the day. Members choose between two fun routes: the “Let’s Go Lesbians” 5K option for those looking to jog or run, and the “Hot Girl Walk” one-mile route for anyone who prefers a shorter stroll. Both routes wrap up around the same time, so everyone finishes together.

But Rainbow Miles is about more than miles. It’s about building family. After the run or walk, folks stick around at Babe’s to talk, laugh, share stories, and celebrate each other’s milestones. There’s even a group chat where members organize hangouts outside of run club. As Felix Sammons, the founder, puts it, “That’s the whole point, it’s about community. We celebrate each other’s accomplishments and support each other through hard moments.”

That sense of belonging is at the heart of the club’s mission:

"Rainbow Miles is a Queer-Centered Run Club dedicated to creating an inclusive, affirming space where LGBTQ+ runners can move freely, connect authentically, and celebrate community. Our mission is to make running not only accessible, but joyful and safe for queer people of all backgrounds. Through our miles, we uplift and support queer-owned businesses, strengthen visibility, and foster belonging—one step, one stride, and one story at a time."

In Richmond’s LGBTQ+ community, Rainbow Miles is already carving out a space where fitness and friendship intersect. Whether you’re lacing up for the 5K or just slipping on sneakers for the “Hot Girl Walk,” you’ll find encouragement, laughter, and a group that’s cheering you on.
