Those familiar with the culinary scene of Richmond know that Oro Pasta stands as a testament to both culinary excellence and a commitment to using natural, high-quality ingredients. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Laine Myers, the Chef and queer owner of Oro, to discuss her love for pasta, dedication to inclusivity, and the diversity of Richmond's local offerings.

At the heart of Oro's culinary philosophy lies a deep-rooted connection to local farmers and growers. Chef Laine shares, "We've built incredible relationships with farmers and local growers over the years, even before Oro was in business. My experience as a chef gave me insight and direct access to great ingredients which has totally shaped the backbone of Oro's sourcing commitment." This commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients serves as the foundation for Oro's menu.

Chef Laine's culinary expertise has not gone unnoticed, earning her the prestigious title of Elby's Best Chef in 2019 and 2020. Reflecting on this achievement, she notes, "I think any recognition like that just inspires a sense of tenacity to keep striving for self-improvement, in all respects." This recognition has become a driving force behind Oro's continuous pursuit of excellence, shaping not only its approach to cooking but also its overall vision.

Chef Laine's identity as a queer chef and restaurant owner has profoundly influenced her journey, causing a shift in focus from accolades to community connectivity and emphasizing the importance of valuing and retaining a dedicated workforce. "The older/more experienced I get, and the more connected I feel to my identity, the less selfish I become," she reflects. Chef Laine discussed pivoting her past focus on awards in the past to a present and future centered on meaningful relationships, supporting local businesses, and crafting honest, delicious food.

Embracing her LGBTQ identity, Chef Laine effortlessly integrates it into the climate and character of Oro. "Really just being myself is one of the strongest ways I can communicate visibility around my queerness," she shares. This authenticity resonates with both staff and patrons, creating an environment where inclusivity is not just a concept, but a lived experience. Chef Laine's personality, humor, empathy, and creativity have become synonymous with Oro, attracting a diverse array of LGBTQIA individuals. "I think for this reason, 90% of our applicants are LGBTQIA-identifying people. I love it! So I feel humbled and full of gratitude by the support we receive on a weekly basis by our patrons and the community."

For LGBTQ travelers seeking inclusive spaces, Oro stands as a welcoming sanctum. Chef Laine emphasizes, "Anyone who knows me knows that service is an obsessive part of the guest experience for me." Whether local or visiting, Oro promises a memorable experience, not just through its exquisite dishes but also by cultivating a team that embodies the values of warmth and acceptance.

On your culinary quest for the best dishes in RVA, Oro beckons with open arms and a menu that reflects the diversity, inclusivity, and excellence of both Chef Laine Myers and the local LGBTQ community.
